Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of vision loss, especially among older adults. Here in Ohio, we see many patients who are managing this condition and are concerned about what they can do to protect their sight. While glaucoma is a serious disease, early detection and proper treatment can make a significant difference. At Primary Vision Care, we’re here to help you navigate your options and preserve your vision for as long as possible.
Glaucoma is often called the "silent thief of sight" because it can progress without noticeable symptoms until significant damage has occurred. The disease typically results from increased pressure inside the eye, which damages the optic nerve. Since this damage is irreversible, early intervention is crucial. While glaucoma can’t be cured, it can be managed effectively. The goal of treatment is to lower intraocular pressure (IOP) and prevent further damage to the optic nerve.
For many patients, medicated eye drops are the first line of defense. These drops work by either reducing the amount of fluid the eye produces or improving drainage to lower eye pressure. There are different types of drops, and we’ll help you determine which is best for your specific needs. The key to success with eye drops is consistency—missing doses can lead to increased pressure and a higher risk of vision loss.
In some cases, we may prescribe oral medications alongside eye drops to further reduce eye pressure. These are less common but can be helpful if drops alone aren’t keeping the pressure at a safe level.
For some patients, laser procedures can help improve the eye’s drainage system and reduce pressure. While we don’t perform laser therapy in-house, we can evaluate whether it’s the right next step for you and refer you to a trusted specialist in the area.
If eye drops, oral medications, and laser treatments aren’t effectively controlling your glaucoma, surgery may be necessary. Procedures like trabeculectomy or minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) can create new drainage pathways to relieve pressure. We’ll work with you to determine if surgical intervention is the best course of action and connect you with an experienced specialist when needed.
Many of our patients here in Ohio tell us they "feel fine" and don’t notice any changes in their vision. But glaucoma often progresses silently, with peripheral vision loss occurring gradually. That’s why regular eye exams are so important—catching the disease early allows us to begin treatment before irreversible damage sets in.
If you’re over 60 or have a family history of glaucoma, it’s time to prioritize your eye health. Regular comprehensive eye exams allow us to monitor your eye pressure and catch any early signs of glaucoma before they impact your vision.
